Hidden between the trees and bushes, along the edge of the forest
says to ALL: Walking the edge of the forest checking snare lines when I catch the unmistakeable scent of fresh spoor on the light breeze.I turn toward the odour and begin working My way as silently as I can through the underbrush.Cover was becoming hard to come by with the falling of the leaves so I stay as near as I can to trees.I was happily downwind so as I walked , the scent grew stronger. It had to have been freshand very nearby. With each step I scanned the growth ahead for any movement or sound.I soon spy a fresh pie about 100 paces ahead.I crouch low and listen while looking slowly all around. It looked to be tabuk and if there were beasts about they would be foraging.

says to ALL: Finding a low hanging branch , I hang the string of small animals I had snared along with My helm and axe.Armed with My trusty spear and a large knife , I begin to walk out in a slow spiral around the spoor. The forest is quiet save for the soft rustling of brush as the breeze penetrates into the dimming light.I try to stay downwind , or at least THINK it will be downwind. Then to My left I hear a short snort.I crouch once more and squint through the trees into the distance trying to resolve upon any prey. Then as if a moving bit of bark upon an old tree . I spot motion as if the bark were breathing.A tabuk slips from behind the cover and begins gnawing on a sapling nearby. The beast is a good 200 paces away.I measure short steps and stay under cover as I apporach.

says to ALL: As the tabuk works at stripping the sapling , I manage to move to within 50 paces. The trees and the distance make it a nigh impossible throw and if done from here would likely miss the heart.I take a deep breath and slide around the tree at My side.I quickly size up the path to the tabuk and what lies on either side.My best bet is to spook it to its right toward a long clear stretch.I steel Myself and draw back the spear then , in twinkling ,am at a full sprint arcing in toward the beast's left.It looks up and in a flash is turning to the right...toward the long run.As I run I draw back My arm and cock the spear.

says to ALL: I have at best a heartbeat to react.I had closed the gap by no more than 10 paces before it began to bolt.To My advantage the tabuk had turned almost 270 degress around to head for the clear stretch. As its flank presented I shot My spear arm forward with a GRUNT and watched the shaft arch toward the prey. The throw was true and hit the beast in the side into the ribcage above the heart. It continued to run through slowed by the spear in its side.I did not slow My own run , following along as the beast sought to escape what I could not.The shaft fouled its legs and it stumbled to the cold ground.Blood streamed freely form the wound and it struggled to regain its footing.I quickened My run as I drew out My knife.Panting I came upon the distressed beast and made a quick grab for the horn.Pushing against the horn as I straddled the tabuk behind its neck , I gave My wrist a hard twist , y turning its head and exposing its neck. With a swift and final blow , I draw the honed edge across the neck below the jaw then snap the head upward, A font of blood soaks the ground and the animal surrenders to its fate.

says to ALL: I set to work immediately , running the knife along its belly and gutting the kill.I let it bleed out before hauling the carcass upon My c shoulders and walking back to retrieve My snare goodies and the rest of My gear.It would be a good afternoon of skinning and butchering. And it would be a better winter with this in My larder.
